Alex Thomas – Client Engagement Team

Joining JCP’s Client Engagement Team proved invaluable to my development as an aspiring solicitor. As a current GLA / Trainee in the Inheritance & Trust Disputes Team at JCP Solicitors,  it is safe to say that the experiences and opportunities I gained whilst a part of the CET really helped me in securing this role.

After applying to other firms, I realised that my lack of experience and commercial awareness was holding me back. Joining the CET at JCP provided me with the confidence, knowledge and opportunity to engage with a wide array of sectors – and was the solution to addressing my missing skill set.

The team requires you to be fast-thinking, versatile and sensitive, offering constant new enquiries and situations; it’s a fantastic introduction to becoming a legal professional, and undoubtedly has eased my transition into a trainee role. It is an active environment, but never one that feels overwhelming or unmanageable. My colleagues in CET were approachable, knowledgeable and supportive, and the team is greatly supported by the Director of Client Engagement, Amy Seppman and other directors / senior colleagues. You never feel as though you have no one to turn to, and you consistently feel and see the impact of the work you are doing in assisting the various teams.

If you are willing to put in the work, it is massively rewarding in knowing you’ve helped people with their problems, and on a personal level, it is an ideal opportunity to learn about so many areas of law – it played a huge part in my decision to join the ITD team for one – and have direct contact with so many experienced, excellent legal professionals.

It is very much a unique role that offers an ideal springboard to progress in the legal sector, allowing you to appreciate the matters a law firm deals with. Whether, like myself at the time, you have very little or no work experience in a law firm and you’re looking to take those first steps into practice, or whether you’ve already been on vacation schemes or placement years and you’re unsure of what areas of law you enjoy or want to specialise in, I would strongly recommend reaching out and applying.
