Finding Divorce Support During Family Mediation Week

From 26th – 30th January 2026, Family Mediation Week takes place across the UK: aiming to raise awareness of how family mediation can support separating families to make joint decisions for the benefit of their whole family’s future.

What Is Family Mediation?

Mediation sees an independent, impartial, professionally trained mediator help divorcing couples to work out their arrangements for children and finances following separation.

Mediators welcome both parties to share their thoughts and come to a solution which will give the best outcome for the family’s individual circumstances. Mediators support negotiations and facilitate constructive discussions, but do not provide advice or tell you what to do: that comes from your legal advisor following on from mediation appointments.

How Does Mediation Help?

Mediation supports collaborative, outcome-based discussions, providing an impartial space to come to agree on child and financial matters. The process can also prove particularly helpful when previously made arrangements are no longer suitable, such as accommodating for children’s needs as they grow up.

Although we do not offer mediation services at JCP, we can signpost divorcing couples to trusted mediation professionals. Our knowledgeable family law specialists can advise couples how to get the best outcome from their mediation session, ensuring that their divorce and financial matters are handled as amicably as possible.

Following mediation we prioritise realistic agreements which are sensitive to individual circumstances, avoiding an expensive and stressful court proceeding as much as possible. Mediation can play a key part in avoiding court, as the agreement made following mediation sessions can be lodged with the court without either party needing to attend.

How Can Practitioners Get Involved with Mediation Week?

For practitioners, the Family Mediation Council offers a range of webinars, in-person events and free resources throughout the Week.
