Hi, I am Angela, and I am a Director in our Family team based at our Carmarthen Office, specialising in all aspects of Family Law including complex children matters, divorce and financial remedies.
I am an appointed member of Resolution’s Children Committee and in June 2025 I will take on the role of co-chair. The aim of the committee is to work to protect children in the family justice system and help members of Resolution put children at the centre of family justice. Having already been a member of Resolution for many years I am committed to promoting a constructive approach to family issues that considers the needs of the whole family and I now look forward to shaping and influencing the future approach in relation to matters concerning children as a member of the Children Committee.
As part of my role on Resolution’s Children Committee, I have written articles for their publication, ‘The Review’ including ‘Surrogacy: A Practical and Personal Approach’ and ‘Transparency Pilot: Coming to a Court Near you’.
As part of my work with Resolution, I have helped the with the preparation of the 2nd edition of Resolution’s Guide for Separating Parents ensuring its appropriateness for Welsh parents and carers. In addition, I have collaborated with Welsh Government, eminent experts at Exeter University and other members of Resolution to ensure lesson plans on co-habitation and modern family issues are compatible with the Welsh Curriculum. Subject to translation to Welsh, these will be placed on the learning platform “Hwb”. I have assisted by providing input and feedback to Resolution for their International Family Law handbook to ensure its appropriateness for Wales. I presented a workshop at Resolution’s National Conference about the Transparency Pilot. This was also the subject of a training event set up by and presented by myself and two barristers from Angel Chambers, Swansea. During 2024, I chaired Resolution’s Modern Family Forum and had the honour of introducing ‘Lady Hale’ as well as other eminent speakers. I also facilitated a question-and-answer session with Freddie McConnell (a trans man who had given birth to his children).
I have collaborated with the Association of Lawyers for Children (ALC) to increase their membership in Wales by collaborating with Sharon Segal KC and Somia Siddiq, co-chairs of ALC. As a result of this collaboration, I helped arrange an event in Cardiff which included a Children’s Guardian, A KC, Solicitors and a psychologist. The Event, called ‘The Voice of the Child’ was very well attended by practitioners and local judiciary, during which I was pleased to facilitate a Question & Answer Session.
I have been a member of the Law Society’s Children Panel for over 14 years - a recognised quality standard for practitioners dealing with children law proceedings. The Legal 500 notes that I “excel in handling complex Children Law matters”. I write a fortnightly legal advice column in the Carmarthen Journal on topical Family law issues. I have often been seen talking about legal issues on S4C’s Welsh Language magazine programme, Prynhawn Da over the last 14 years. I have also advised on the S4C Welsh Language documentary, “Sberm ar y We” and appeared on BBC Radio Wales with Jason Mohamed speaking about changed to family law.
I have worked over the last year with the Legal Centre for Children (Swansea University) and the Observatory on Human Rights for Children (Swansea University) to foster working relationships between them and Resolution. In addition, I have assisted in editing their website which is currently being revamped; have edited an article prepared by a student and helped encourage membership to the recently formed Wales Legal Network of Lawyers.
I continue to be a member of The Children’s Commissioner for Wales’ Adult Panel and sits alongside other adults who are specialists in their various fields, bringing their skills and knowledge to be a critical friend to the Commissioner. Their role is to analyse and scrutinise the plans and work of the Commissioner, providing valued feedback, input and ideas. This expands my experience of issues wider than my work within JCP which serves to enhance mine and the team’s practice further.
I continue to have significant involvement in the HMCTS’ pilot of the Family Law Private Law Portal, which has involved attending regular meetings, and providing invaluable feedback to the Designated Family Judge at the pilot Court and HMCTS.
I continue to deal with all aspects of family law that JCP Solicitors offer. My work with clients has resulted in me having a 5-star review on Review Solicitors. Dealing with many complex children matters including serious and significant allegations of domestic abuse and alienating behaviour. In 2024, I was successful in an application on behalf of a mother to terminate the father’s parental responsibility. I also deal with modern family matters (such as surrogacy) and financial matters gaining an excellent reputation for quality in all aspects of family law amongst clients and fellow professionals. I focus on trying to avoid conflict and avoid court proceedings where possible by providing clients with non-court dispute resolution options and advice around reducing acrimony. I assist clients to prevent future issues by advising on and preparing co-habitation agreement/licences and pre-nuptial agreements. Being able to provide a choice for clients to speak in English and/or Welsh provides comfort to them, which is essential in such an emotional area of law.
I have successfully set up a local initiative setting up a ‘Hub’ for Carmarthenshire family lawyers to meet and share ideas, with a view to fostering better working relationships to ultimately provide better outcomes for clients.
Out of work, I can be found spending time with my family as well as cycling or walking the Welsh Countryside. I have participated in a number of half marathons and the CARTEN (a cycle from Cardiff to Tenby) often raising funds for charities by doing so.
