Remember, Remember: Staying Safe On Bonfire Night

On 5th November, communities across Wales will take part in Bonfire Night celebrations and enjoy fireworks displays in community centres, sports grounds, schools, and open spaces. Ian Rees, Director and Head of Personal Injury at JCP Solicitors, explains how to stay safe during Bonfire Night festivities.

Staying Safe for Bonfire Night

For families and friends wanting to enjoy Bonfire Night with minimal risk, organised community displays offer the safest option. These events reduce the potential for harm compared to at-home displays, where family members could become injured when setting up fireworks, using sparklers, or lighting bonfires.

Organised events also feature more security and safety measures. This is vital for those looking to enjoy Bonfire Night responsibly, as Bonfire Night can see a small minority of people behaving in an anti-social manner if unregulated gatherings get out of hand. In extreme cases, the misuse of fireworks around Bonfire Night can lead to serious injury.

The Welsh Ambulance Service recently reported that they received 3,433 calls to 999 over the Bonfire Night weekend last year, and a further 8,159 to the non-emergency line 111. With calls ranging from burns and smoke inhalation to serious injury, the Ambulance Service is encouraging people to attend professional, organised displays and avoid taking risks.
