Staying Safe During Halloween, Diwali And Bonfire Night

As autumn gets underway, Halloween, Diwali and Bonfire Night bring plenty of opportunities to get together, celebrate and enjoy the season. But with fireworks, candles, costumes and darker evenings also come some additional safety considerations.

For families heading out trick-or-treating, make sure children can be easily seen by drivers and other pedestrians, particularly if they are wearing dark costumes. Avoid costumes with trailing fabrics that could catch on objects or come into contact with flames, and choose face paints rather than masks that could restrict vision.

Diwali is a time of celebration, often involving candles, diyas and fireworks. Keep naked flames well away from curtains, decorations and other flammable materials, and never leave candles unattended. Fireworks should always be handled by a responsible adult and used in accordance with the instructions.

The same applies on Bonfire Night. Attend organised displays where possible, rather than holding your own, and keep a safe distance from bonfires and fireworks. Remember that sparklers can reach extremely high temperatures and should never be given to young children.

If you are hosting friends or family, take a few moments to check your home and garden for potential hazards before the celebrations begin. Good lighting, clear walkways and sensible supervision can all help prevent accidents.

Despite taking reasonable precautions, accidents can still happen. If you or a family member suffers an injury because someone else has failed to take appropriate care, it may be worth seeking legal advice to understand your rights and whether you may be entitled to compensation.

A little preparation can go a long way towards ensuring that these celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons.
