This blog marks the occasion of me qualifying as a solicitor into the Asbestos Team, following the completion of my training contract with JCP Solicitors. The last two years of training have flown by, and now, I am very excited for what’s ahead.

My route to becoming an Asbestos Solicitor hasn’t been the most typical. I actually come from a healthcare background, having previously worked as an NHS physiotherapist. A few years ago, my working day would involve ward-rounds, respiratory rehabilitation and working closely with nurses and other members of healthcare teams.

I always hoped that my legal career would allow me to continue working within a role where I was able to make a real and significant difference to clients’ lives.

This month we settled a complex claim which meant that our client could obtain the funding required to access potentially life-prolonging treatment, which is not available on the NHS. Our role will allow the client access to future private care, which would not have been available to them otherwise. This outcome was more rewarding than I could have imagined.

Having been both a healthcare professional and law student means I understand both sides of the coin when it comes to the clinical and legal perspectives of an asbestos related condition. I strongly believe that our clients should have access to specialist advice to better understand how they can best manage their condition. The nature of these claims means that our clients often need more than what would be traditionally expected of a solicitor and my healthcare experience allows me to provide this additional support. I am thrilled to be part of a wider team where client/patient care is the priority.

I know it sounds cliché, but I wanted to become a solicitor to help people when they need it the most. Specialising in asbestos allows me to do just that - the work is incredibly interesting, diverse, and fast-paced. The guidance and support I have received so far has been everything I could have wished for.

I am passionate to fight for our clients and I’m proud to be joining such a meaningful team. I feel very humbled to be able to work for the clients that we have and can honestly say that they are at the heart of everything we do as a team.

I look forward to working in a career where I know I will be able to help many more people in the future.
